Columbia Mills South Carolina State Museum
Existing Conditions: The Columbia Mills building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As a result, any modification to the building must be reviewed and approved by both State Historic Preservation Office and the City of Columbia Planning Division. The existing building is load bearing masonry exterior walls with heavy timber intermediate columns and heavy timber floor framing. The interior is a mix of several modern and historic materials. Many of the interior wall surfaces of the original exterior walls is the original unfinished brick masonry.
Work Description: The title of the project “Columbia Mills Roof and Window Replacement” can be misleading as there are many other elements of the building
that were to be renovated. We completed all scopes of work while the Museum and other agencies occupy the building and conduct business as usual. Removing and replacing all the massive historical 248 windows with aesthetically identical modern windows. We did this by working on 3 windows at a time to insure each window was installed before end of day. The roof was a complete reroof of the current 100 year old main building which houses irreplaceable historical exhibits. Per GMK’s design we demo the existing atrium. Tyler renovated and restored the boiler building which provides access for handicapped patrons to multiple levels of the museum. Site work repairs and improvements where done in multiple areas around the museum. Abatement of all the exterior soffits, rafter tails and trim that were then restored and repainted.
